CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH FOR DOTPH
03/27/2001

Allegations made against the service provided by the .ph domain registry are unfounded and completely without basis. This was revealed during the meeting of the ITECC Sub-Cluster on Consumer Protection last Friday at the BOI Bldg. in Buendia.

DotPH is the official registry for the .ph, .com.ph, .net.ph and .org.ph domains. It is tasked with the responsibility of accepting registrations for these domains and administering the database in accordance with the smooth functioning of the Domain Name System (DNS).

The issue of poor service by DotPH was first taken up by ITECC in a meeting two weeks ago at the same venue. A series of postings in two mailing lists had brought the matter to the attention of Consumer Protection co-Chairs Dennis Deveza and Jonathan Domingo. They agreed to provide a forum to discuss the issue and invited the concerned parties.

Present at that meeting were representatives of DotPH and some members of the mailing lists. "We accepted ITECC's invitation because we wanted to get to the bottom of these allegations. We felt it was important to verify the complaints and act to resolve them as soon as possible", said a DotPH representative. At the conclusion of the meeting, it was agreed that the complainants would consolidate the issues raised against DotPH and submit it to the Consumer Protection Sub-cluster at the next meeting. A copy would also be given to DotPH and sufficient time alloted for their response.

However, at the subsequent Sub-cluster meeting last Friday, no such list was submitted and no one stepped forward to substantiate the complaints made regarding the service provided by DotPH.

Joel Disini, CEO of DotPH, was present at the meeting and commented, "I'm glad that the issue of customer service has been laid to rest. The allegations made in the mailing lists were disturbing, to say the least, because they reflected badly on the efforts of DotPH personnel who work hard to provide good customer support. We have come a long way since the early days of the registry and it's good to see that our increased efforts reflect that."

The focus now shifts to an unsigned petition submitted by Mr. JR Contreras of Inter.Net to ITECC last Friday. The petition calls for a redelegation of the registry functions to a body whose composition, responsibilities and structure have yet to be determined. It was unclear how Mr. Contreras would be able to proceed with a redelegation without proving any malfeasance on the part of DotPH.

At the suggestion of Consumer Protection co-Chair Dennis Deveza, the concerned parties agreed to meet and thresh out their differences in the hope of coming to an acceptable solution.
